FAQ

HOW DOES IT DRIVE ON LAND?
Sealegs is driven hydraulically by an air-cooled motor under the seat. The air-cooled motor is a 16hp Honda, 2 cylinder, 4 stroke which uses the same petrol as the outboard.

HOW FAST DOES IT GO?

10km/h on the land, and 30-35 knots on the water. The wheel motors are low speed, high torque (although Sealegs did set a new World Speed Record for an amphibious boat of 105kmph on Sydney harbour, 7th December 2007). * All speeds shown on the Sealegs website and in our printed material is indicative only, as speed will vary greatly depending on sea and weather conditions, as well payload weight in the boat etc.

HOW STEEP A GRADIENT WILL IT CLIMB?

One in four gradient = 14 degree slope.

WHAT SURFACES CAN IT DRIVE OVER?

As a general rule Sealegs will operate over terrain where you can launch a 6.1m trailer boat using a car.

HOW LONG CAN I DRIVE WITH THE HONDA INBOARD MOTOR?

You can drive for a maximum of 10 minutes, which is approximately 1km. Run time begins the moment you start the engine.

WHY ONLY 10 MINUTES OR 1KM ON LAND?

Because the Honda inboard engine and hydraulic transmission oil are air cooled, after 10 minutes of constant use it requires approximately 20 minutes to cool down before use again.

HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH?

6.1m D-Tube = 1,090kgs (2400lbs) and the 6.1m RIB = 990kgs (2200lbs) (115hp E-Tec outboard and 80L fuel) 7.1m RIB = 1220kgs (2690lbs) (with 150 E-Tec outboard and 80L fuel)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RIB & A D-TUBE?

A RIB is a Rigid Inflatable Boat as has inflated tubes made of 828 grade Hypalon (a rubber compound), compared to a D-Tube which is an all aluminium boat made from 4mm 5083 Marine Grade aluminium. Our customers tend to be drawn to a RIB if they're looking for more recreational use that includes fishing, diving, water skiing and general boating. D-Tube owners tend to be more orientated to purely fishing and working their boats harder with cray pots and scallop dredges etc.

The D-Tube does offer the added Option of having Clears domed into the Bimini, which creates a sheltered forward cockpit area for those looking for extra protection from the weather. The RIB has the Option of a Bimini only.

WHAT IS THE HEIGHT WITH THE WINDSCREEN FOLDED DOWN?

2.38m (7' 1").

WHAT IS THE HIGHEST POINT WITH THE WINDSCREEN FOLDED DOWN BUT SITTING ON A TRAILER?

The Ski Hoop at 2.06m.

WHERE ARE THEY MADE?

Auckland, New Zealand

DO YOU HAVE TO REGISTER IT?

Each country is different but in general you cannot register or license Sealegs for use on public roads.

DO THE WHEELS CAUSE MUCH DRAG?

No - all the wheels lift up and retract above the water line.

CAN YOU LAND A SEALEGS BOAT ON A SURF BEACH?

We are aware of some Sealegs owners who do this successfully on a regular basis. However, Sealegs promotes responsible use of our amphibious craft at all times, and we advise that it is up to the seamanship and common sense of the person in charge of driving the boat to use their Sealegs boat in a manner that does not risk human life.

AN THE BOATS DRIVE ON LAND IN REVERSE?
Yes they can, at variable speeds up to 10kph (6mph)

WHAT IS XRT (Extended Run Time)?

The Sealegs Extended Run Time Option (XRT) is a commercial upgrade offered on Sealegs amphibious boats to increase the on land run time from 10 minutes to at least 30 minutes of continuous operation on land at high ambient temperatures (40 degrees Celsius) Significant amount of research and development has gone into the Extended Run Time hydraulic and thermal engineering. Sealegs Product Engineers have designed the fitment of the additional components into the onboard engine box space.  All additional XRT components have been evaluated and field tested to ensure that they are light weight and durable in a harsh marine environment. Note that operation of the hydraulic drive systems in flood waters uses the cooling effect of the flood waters and with the XRT upgrade allows continuous run time.

The XRT option features the following components and specifications over standard models:

  • 24hp Honda twin cylinder, 4-stroke engine on 6.1m boats (upgraded from 16hp)
  • Hydraulic Oil Cooler – Coated aluminium for high performance and corrosion resistance
  • Hydraulic Hot Flush Valve – With anodised aluminium cartridge valve to send hot transmission oil to the oil tank, replenishing it with cooler, filtered oil. This ensures high performance and reliability
  • Fan Assisted Hydraulic Oil Cooling- An additional high performance fan is coupled to the hydraulic oil cooler.  Also assists in reducing engine box air temperature
  • Improved thermal transfer stainless steel exhaust muffler - Reduces engine box temperature by isolating the hottest component in the boat.
  • Custom exhaust shroud- Removes heat from the engine and exhaust efficiently via a ducted channel to direct hot air out of the engine box while serving as a radiation shield
  • Over Temperature Alarm- Warns if the system starts to overheat. A warning buzzer will sound to indicate to the operator that the boat should be slowed down, or stopped allowing the system to cool down. This should only happen in extreme situations

CAN YOU TOW IT ON ITS WHEELS?

No - however you can get a drive on drive off trailer for towing it long distances. There is also a “free wheel valve” option which enables the boat to be pushed or towed to at low speed for very short distances on its wheels.

DOES THE PRICE OF A SEALEGS INCLUDE THE PRICE OF THE OUTBOARD?

No, on the 6.1m models you can chose either a 115hp 4-Stroke Yamaha, 130hp Yamaha 2-Stroke or the 115hp Evinrude E- TEC. On the 7.1m you can chose between the Evinrude E-TEC 150hp, the Yamaha 130hp Salt Water Series, or the Yamaha 150hp 4-Stroke. Only the Evinrude E-Tec outboards meet CE Proof standards needed for import into European countries, and the California Emission Standards for North America and the rest of the World.

WHY SHOULD I UPGRADE TO THE EVINRUDE AND WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IT AND THE YAMAHA?

The Yamaha is a carbureted 2 Stroke, the Evinrude is a Direct inject 2 Stroke which meets the latest emission standards. The Evinrude is quieter, needs less service and has better fuel and oil efficiency. Refer: www.brp.com

CAN I BUY A SEALEGS AMPHIBIOUS BOAT WITHOUT THE OUTBOARD MOTOR?

No, all Sealegs amphibious boats have to have one of the outboards specified on our price sheet installed at the factory, due to the fact that our boats are manufactured with an integrated wiring loom that is custom made for our craft. The outboard ignition switch also controls the inboard motor and we have a dual charging system. We also sea trial everyone of our boats before shipping, and this can only be done with the outboard engine mounted.

WHERE IS THE PETROL TANK, AND HOW MUCH DOES IT HOLD?

The fuel tank is under the floor and has a capacity of 80 litres, which is about 3-4 toke tanks. The 7.1m model only also has the option of an additional 100L Auxiliary fuel tank.

DO THEY COME ANY BIGGER OR SMALLER?

At the moment there is a Rigid Hull Inflatable and an Aluminum D-Tube which are both 6.1M (20ft) and based on the same hull design, as well as a bigger 7.1m (23ft) RIB model. They cannot be built smaller due to the size and weight of the hydraulic equipment required to make the amphibian perform in various conditions.

WHAT IS THE LOA OF EACH MODEL WHEN ON A TRAILER?

Add 1m to the length of each model. So the 6.1m = 7.1m when on a trailer, and the 7.1m model = 8.1m when on a trailer. What is the LOA of the D-Tube with Bow Sprit option added? The length is 6.4m (21ft)

WHERE CAN I BUY ONE?

Sealegs has authorized agents in the USA, United Kingdom, France, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Middle East, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Srilanka, & Bangladesh,. All other enquiries should be directed to the New Zealand Office.

CAN I RETRO FIT THE SYSTEM ONTO AN EXISTING BOAT?

No - With the two marinised hydraulic motors, three custom marine lift cylinders, custom front wheel steering cylinder, front and rear alloy legs/bushes/brackets, hydraulic tank, filters, hydraulic transmission pump and remote hydraulic joystick, hydraulic manifold block with valves, solenoids, flow divider, control electrics, tandem hydraulic gear pump, 24hp Honda engine, throttle/choke control, cable, bell housing, torque coupler, inboard engine bed and engine box, custom stainless steel hubs, alloy rims and ATV tyres plus all the hydraulic hoses and stainless steel fittings it makes it nearly impossible to retrofit. This also explains part of the extra cost of Sealegs amphibious boats. Refer: CONTACT US

WHAT WIND AND SEA STATE CAN A SEALEGS BOATS OPERATE IN?

Sealegs boats are all certified to comply with CE category C, which is 2m swells and Beaufort wind scale 6.
